I love supporting Pacific movies and arts. I especially love web series. My son and I fell in love with our first web series, The Factory, in 2013. We lived in Samoa at the time but every week we were hanging for the next episode to be released. Last night I was so impressed with the newest web series to come out of New Zealand, Baby Mama's Club, that I knew I had to blog about it. I do want to point out that Baby Mama's Club is an Adults Only series as it does contain language and adult themes.
1. Women
I love that the main characters are all women. Not only were they women, but they all come from different Pacific Islands. The characters were also different to the usual stereotypical Pacific women we see on television. They were business women, artists, university students and family carers.
2. Pacific Languages
I also enjoyed hearing the Adults only warning being read out in the different Pacific languages at the beginning of each Baby Mama's Club episode. Sharing our culture in any way we can is so important in keeping it alive in our generations to come. Hearing the languages spoken throughout parts of the episodes was also wonderful.
3. Removes Stigmas
Baby Mama's Club takes away the shame and the stigma that many single mother's face, especially in the Pacific. It puts emphasis on the fact that the child is not just the responsibility of the mother. It questions the part that many absent fathers play in a child's upbringing and calls for their responsibility.
